چکیده
objective: it is well known that diabetes is one of the main health challenges. according to the evidence presented in recent years by investigators, serum uric acid has emerged as a possible risk factor for diabetes mellitus. the aim of the present study was to compare the mean serum uric acid and the antioxidant activity of glutathione levels in patients with diabetes and the control group. materials and methods: this cross-sectional study carried out on 30 diabetic patients (51.3 ±13.8 years, 15 males and 15 females) as well as 30 non-diabetic controls (54.2 ±13.4 years, 15 males and 15 females). the uric acid and glutathione levels were measured by uricase-pap method and glutathione the butler (dtnb) methods, respectively. analysis was performed using spss version 20. statistical significance was defined as p<0.05. results: mean serum uric acid levels in diabetic patients (2.87±0.63 mg/dl) was lower than the control group (3.76±0.7 mg/dl). also, mean total glutathione in diabetic group (181.64±38.7 μmol/l) was lower than the control group (273.6±39.28μmol/l). differences in uric acid and glutathione levels between the two groups were significant (p<0.05). conclusion: this study indicated that serum uric acid and glutathione levels changed in diabetic patients compared to healthy control subjects. it may be related to the biochemical interaction between serum glucose and purine metabolism, with increased excretion of uric acid during hyperglycemia and glycosuria. the present study revealed that evaluation of the levels of biochemical factors in diabetic patients at different stages of the disease, can be helpful in their condition.

متن کاملSerum Levels of Sialic Acid and Neuraminidase Activity in Cardiovascular, Diabetic and Diabetic Retinopathy Patients
Background: Sialic acid is a component of serum that is elevated in diseases such as diabetes and certain malignancies. The normal range of SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity in different populations are varied, probably due to racial differences. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to obtain the average SSA concentration and serum neuraminidase activity, in an Iran...
متن کاملSerum Levels of Interleukin 17 in Patients with Pemphigus and Healthy Subjects
Introduction: Pemphigus is a relatively rare autoimmune bullous disease involving skin and mucous epithelia. The disease occurs as a result of production of auto-antibodies against inter-cellular epithelia especially cadherin and desmoglein. Interleukin 17 (IL-17) is one of the specific cytokines of T helper. IL-17 plays an important role in delayed type reaction and recruits neutrophils and mo...
متن کاملComparison of Serum Folic Acid Level in Oral Lichen Planus Patients and Healthy Subjects
Background and aim: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a chronic mucocutaneous inflammatory disease. Although the etiology of this disease is unknown, some factors including stress, antioxidant deficiency, and folic acid deficiency have been claimed to have a role in its incidence. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the serum folic acid level in OLP patients and healthy subjects. Mat...
متن کاملComparison of serum levels of calcium, vitamin-D, phosphorous and C-reactive protein in acne patients versus healthy subjects
Background: Acne vulgaris is among common bothersome skin problems. Recognition of contributing factors would help to prevent acne. Some dietary and inflammatory factors are among suggested etiologies. Accordingly, in this study, the serum levels of calcium, vitamin D, phosphorous and C-reactive protein (CRP) were determined and compared in acne patients and healthy subjects. ...
متن کاملSerum uric acid levels in patients with Familial Mediterranean Fever and healthy controls
Introduction Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is one of the best described auto-inflammatory diseases. It has also been suggested recently that gout is an autoinflammatory disease. Monosodium urate crystals are known to induce inflammation by complex cellular mechanisms, mainly involving inflammasome and toll-like receptors which are also involved in the pathogenesis of inflammation in FMF. U...
